Drifting on the Shenandoah

Shot aerials today along the South and North forks of the Shenandoah river for a tourism campaign.

Three hours in the air in my friend Steve Bussman’s Hughes 500. The sports car of helicopters for pilots and a fantastic ship to shoot from. Played around with some video footage from the 5D Mark II– Fun to shoot, but it was windy and bumpy along the ridge lines. The trusty KS-6 gyro can only do so much stabilization.

We took a break in the late afternoon and landed at Front Royal – Warren County for a half an hour. Watched a Husky Taildragger practice touch and go’s in an 10 knot crosswind. The pilot had his hands and feet full trying to keep the plane on the runway. Great crosswind training. He was able to take-off with minimal run-up and roll. The little Husky jumped into the air as soon as enough lift was generated.
