From a helicopter they become immense white fields of drying salt surrounded by levees that control the tidal surges. I first shot these salt pans in 1990. I had recently switched over from Kodachrome to the first version of Fuji Velvia 50. I was excited to see how the pans would render on the hyper saturated film. These images were processed in Capture One and then a bit of “Velvia” was added via Alien Skin’s “Exposure” plug-in for Photoshop.

Spent five hours in the air yesterday. Amazing light and even better, a pilot who knew how to fly for the camera.

Wind Turbine is on the east bay, the marshes are in the southern reach of the salt flats.

(You have to scroll to each persons name in the galleries)

This image was created from a Bell Jet Ranger for the Ducks Unlimited Annual Report. Ducks Unlimited is purchasing and leasing large tracts of coastal and inland marshes to act as buffers for waterfowl and wildlife. Other shots for the annual report included people in the midst of these lands, building new marsh barriers, aerials of the Mississippi River flyway and tidal reaches along the Gulf of Mexico.
